God, she was such a weenie. All along, she’d been shouting from the housetops how she could take care of herself. For the past three years, insisting she didn’t need anyone’s help or protection. In the space of less than three minutes at the kitchen sink, she made a liar and a fool of herself.

The urge to throw her head back and howl was so blasted strong it almost drove her to her knees.

No, Brynn! You are stronger than that. If she was frightened, she had a perfect reason to be. Reggie had tried to kill her, after all. But she couldn’t succumb to her fears.

Minutes crawled by, marked by the loud ticking of the ornate clock on the wall. Brynn moved to the corner windows, trying to catch a glimpse of Josh in the yard. Her hand grew clammy on the hard plastic of Josh’s iPhone. She laid it on his bedside table, wiped her palms on her sleep pants, and sat on the edge of the mattress, hugging Josh’s pillow, burying her nose in it. Spice and citrus fragrance swirled through her senses, calming her agitated nerves. She inhaled deeply, holding the fresh scent in her lungs, letting it work its magic on her.

By the time she heard his footsteps on the stairs, she’d calmed enough to feel guilty for disturbing his sleep.

A sharp rap sounded on the doorframe. “Brynn? It’s me.”

She raced across the room and flipped the security bar. Once she had the entry open, she tugged him over the threshold and slammed the door shut behind him.

He swept her up in his arms and carried her to the overstuffed chair in the corner. He settled on the cushion and cuddled her close, resting his chin on the crown of her head. “Whoever was out there is getting more brazen. I found cigarette butts on this side of the gate.”

Shivers coursed over her back and her limbs shook. The stench of tobacco smoke had infiltrated her dream.
